Obol - Leopold I Gold strike

The 1682 Hungarian gold obol falls within Leopold I's long and turbulent reign over a kingdom that was, at the time, largely occupied by Ottoman forces — the Habsburgs controlled little more than a western strip. Gold strikes of minor denominations from this period were produced in very limited quantities, often as presentation or trial pieces rather than for general use, which explains why H#1352 survivors are almost exclusively found in institutional collections.
