John Hunyadi never held the Hungarian crown. These obols were struck during his regency — he governed as regent for the young Ladislaus V after the death of Albert II, navigating a fractured nobility while simultaneously organizing the military campaigns that would culminate in the 1456 Siege of Belgrade. The coins circulated under his authority but bore the royal arms of Hungary, a deliberate assertion of legitimacy for a man whose power rested entirely on military prestige and political maneuvering rather than dynastic right.
