James II ruled Catalonia during one of the most administratively complex periods in the Crown of Aragon's history, simultaneously holding the Kingdom of Sicily before ceding it under the Treaty of Anagni in 1295 — a diplomatic settlement brokered by Pope Boniface VIII to resolve a war that had dragged on since the Sicilian Vespers of 1282. Barcelona's mint operated under considerable pressure during this realignment, producing fractional billon coinage to serve a commercial economy that ran almost entirely on small-denomination exchange. The obol, at half a denier, was the workhorse of that system.
