Obverse description Crowned facing bust of King James II of Aragon depicted in a schematic, medieval style typical of hammered billon coinage, set within the central field. The royal effigy is rendered in low relief with a stylized crown above the head, characteristic of 13th–14th century Catalan mint work. A circular Latin legend surrounds the bust, reading +IACOBUS:REX, identifying the monarch as James, King. The flan is irregular and slightly clipped at the edges, as is common for hammered obol coinage of this period. The overall design is coarse but consistent with Barcelona Mint production of the reign.
