| Reverse description | Central field bears a schematic frontal portrait bust, heavily stylized and degenerate in the Carolingian tradition, depicted facing with simplified facial features and a diadem or crown indicated by angular strokes. The bust occupies the majority of the field, with the surrounding area enclosed by a beaded border. The abbreviated Latin legend MET/ΛLO, denoting the mint of Melle, is disposed in the field around or below the portrait in characteristic 12th-century feudal lettering. The flan is irregular and the strike is typical of hammered provincial coinage of the period. |
