Obverse description Central field occupied by a large cross pattée with concave arms, enclosed within a plain inner circle surrounded by a beaded border. Four stylized fleurs-de-lis or foliate ornaments are disposed in the angles between the cross arms, filling the space between the inner circle and the outer legend. The circumferential Latin legend reads CΛRLVƧ REX R, invoking the royal authority of Charles the Simple, executed in characteristic Carolingian letterforms with a cross as initial mark. The overall design is rendered in a degenerate Carolingian style typical of feudal immobilized coinage of the 12th century.

Reverse description Central field bears a schematic frontal portrait bust, heavily stylized and degenerate in the Carolingian tradition, depicted facing with simplified facial features and a diadem or crown indicated by angular strokes. The bust occupies the majority of the field, with the surrounding area enclosed by a beaded border. The abbreviated Latin legend MET/ΛLO, denoting the mint of Melle, is disposed in the field around or below the portrait in characteristic 12th-century feudal lettering. The flan is irregular and the strike is typical of hammered provincial coinage of the period.
