Reverse description A four-spoked wheel with a raised central boss occupies the field, its spokes dividing the reverse into four quarters. The abbreviated ethnic inscription ΣΥΡΑ is distributed one or two letters per quarter, rendered in archaic Greek characters. The entire design is enclosed within a plain linear circle, itself set within a beaded outer border. The composition is a hallmark of early Syracusan coinage and serves as a civic symbol of the city.
