Henry I ruled Brabant during a period of aggressive territorial consolidation, and his coinage program reflected both his political ambitions and his need to finance them. The obol denomination — half a denier — circulated primarily among the lower strata of market transactions, the kind of small commerce that larger denominations never touched.
