Eberhard II held the archbishopric through one of the most turbulent stretches of 13th-century imperial politics, repeatedly clashing with the Hohenstaufen emperors and spending years in exile as a result. Small silver fractions like this obol circulated in the Salzburg market economy during a period when the archbishopric was simultaneously asserting territorial independence and managing the considerable revenues from Alpine salt trading — the economic foundation that made Salzburg worth fighting over in the first place.
