Charles II of Évreux — "Charles the Bad" — was one of the most disruptive figures in 14th-century French politics, spending much of his reign plotting against the Valois crown, briefly allied with England during the Hundred Years' War, and imprisoned by John II in 1356 before escaping three years later. His county's coinage reflects the turbulent autonomy of a lord who repeatedly leveraged his Norman territories as bargaining chips against Paris.
The obol coronat takes its name from the crown type that distinguished it from competing petty coinages circulating in Normandy at the time. Billon issues from Évreux are notoriously variable in alloy quality across the period.
