Year 11 of Claudius's reign — LΙΑ in the Alexandrian regnal notation — places this issue squarely in the period when Egypt's prefect was managing the aftermath of serious ethnic violence between the Greek and Jewish communities of Alexandria. Claudius had written to the city just a year prior in his famous letter of 41 AD, threatening both factions with severe consequences. The mint kept striking regardless; provincial bronze coinage for daily transactions waited for no emperor's diplomacy.
