Claudius became emperor in 41 AD under circumstances the senate found embarrassing — discovered hiding behind a curtain by Praetorian guardsmen after Caligula's assassination, he was essentially installed by the military before any constitutional process could intervene. Alexandria's mint responded quickly, striking this issue in Year 2 of his reign as part of the broader realignment of provincial coinage to acknowledge the new Julio-Claudian authority.
