Charles Robert of Anjou — who seized the Hungarian throne after a prolonged dynastic struggle that lasted from 1301 until his final coronation in 1310 — undertook a sweeping monetary reform in 1338 that fundamentally restructured Hungarian silver coinage. The reform introduced new weight standards and reoriented the kingdom's mint output toward the demands of an expanding Carpathian Basin economy flush with silver from the newly developed mines at Körmöcbánya.
At 0.39 g, the obol sat at exactly half the reformed denár, a relationship enforced with unusual consistency across Charles Robert's later issues.
