Obverse description Central field displays a plain cross pattée within a raised inner circle, dividing the field into four quarters. A small annulet or pellet appears in the upper right canton of the cross. The surrounding legend, struck in Gothic-influenced Latin capitals, runs clockwise between the inner circle and the irregular coin edge, reading + KAROLVS COMES. The flan is irregularly shaped and slightly concave, characteristic of hammered billon coinage of the late Capetian period.
