| Obverse description | Central Karolus monogram composed of the interlaced letters K, A, R, O, L, and S arranged around a central lozenge or small diamond motif, rendered in the Carolingian cursive style typical of the reign of Charles II (the Bald). The monogram occupies the full field of the flan, with individual letter elements extending toward the coin's periphery. No surrounding legend is present on this side. The die work is characteristic of ninth-century Frankish hammered coinage, with bold, angular strokes and an unadorned field. |
