Obverse description Central field occupied by the Carolingian royal monogram KRLS, formed by the interlaced letters K, R, L, and S in the characteristic Carolingian cipher style. The monogram is rendered in bold relief, with the individual letter strokes intersecting at the center around a small lozenge or square void. The design is contained within a plain inner field, itself enclosed by a beaded border running along the coin's periphery. The flan is irregular and slightly convex, as is typical of ninth-century hammered Carolingian silver.
