Obverse description Within a beaded inner circle, the Carolingian royal monogram of Charles II rendered in Carolingian minuscule style occupies the central field. A Latin legend in Roman capitals runs continuously around the periphery, separated from the inner circle by the coin's irregular hammered flan. The monogram's interlaced letterforms are characteristic of the Edict of Pîtres coinage reform of 864. The overall composition reflects the standardized Carolingian type introduced under Charles the Bald.
