Obverse description Central field occupied by the Carolingian royal monogram of Charles II (the Bald), composed of interlaced letters in bold relief, enclosed within a raised beaded inner circle. The monogram, a characteristic cipher of the Carolingian chancery tradition, is rendered in a stylised, somewhat angular fashion typical of mid-ninth-century hammered coinage. A circular Latin legend reading CRΛTIΛ D-I REX, meaning 'Charles, king by God's grace', surrounds the beaded circle, with a cross pattée serving as the initial mark at the beginning of the inscription. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, consistent with hand-hammered production of the period.
