| Beschrijving voorzijde | Carolingian royal monogram of Charles II (the Bald) occupying the central field, composed of interlaced letters in the characteristic Carolingian style, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The monogram is formed from the letters of KAROLUS, rendered in the elaborate ligature typical of ninth-century Frankish royal coinage. A circular Latin legend reading GRATIA D-I REX surrounds the beaded circle, proclaiming the king's divine mandate. The lettering is composed of irregular, hand-cut characters consistent with provincial hammered coinage of the Carolingian period. |
