Charles II — Charles the Bald — inherited a fractured kingdom from the divisions of Verdun in 843, and his coinage policy was among the more deliberate administrative acts of his reign. The Clermont-Ferrand mint, operating under Carolingian reform structures, produced obols as the half-unit of the denier, essential for small transactions in a largely agrarian economy where full deniers were often too valuable for everyday exchange. The multiple Prou reference numbers reflect recognized die variants within the type, not a single homogeneous issue.
