Charles the Bald inherited a fractured Carolingian realm after the Treaty of Verdun in 843 divided the empire among Louis the Pious's surviving sons. Monetary reform was an early priority: his 864 Edict of Pîtres overhauled the Frankish coinage system, restricting legal minting to royal-controlled sites and establishing tighter weight standards — this obol, as the half-denier fraction, falls within the pre-Pîtres production window when workshop control was considerably looser.
