Obverse description Carolingian royal monogram of Charles II (Karolus) occupying the central field, enclosed within a plain inner circle bordered by a beaded ring. The monogram is rendered in the Carolingian interlaced style, with letters forming a cross-like composite device. A Latin legend reading GRΛTIΛ D-I REX (Charles, king by the grace of God) runs around the periphery between the beaded circle and the irregular coin edge, introduced by a cross pattée.
