Reverse description Central field displays a plain, bold cross with equal arms, contained within a beaded inner circle. The cross divides the inner field into four quadrants, each left plain. The surrounding legend in Latin capital letters runs between the beaded circle and the irregular flan edge, reading + CARNOTIS CIVITAS, identifying the mint city of Chartres. The overall style is consistent with Carolingian hammered silver coinage of the reign of Charles II (the Bald), with characteristic flat relief and variable die alignment.
