Reverse description Central field displays a plain cross with expanded terminals, occupying the full diameter of the inner beaded circle. The arms of the cross divide the inner field into four quadrants. A circular legend runs between the beaded inner circle and the coin's edge, identifying the issuing mint at Chalon-sur-Saône. The style and execution are consistent with Carolingian provincial mint practice under Charles II, with the legend rendered in characteristic ninth-century uncial letterforms.
