The Edict of Pistres in 864 was Charles II's attempt to reassert royal control over coinage, restricting minting to a handful of authorized sites and suppressing the proliferation of unauthorized local issues that had spread across the fragmented Carolingian territories. Amiens was among the confirmed royal mints under this reorganization. The obol — the half-denier — circulated primarily in small transactions and alms-giving, and surviving examples in any condition are considerably scarcer than their denier counterparts from the same mints.
