Boleslaus I earned his epithet not from cruelty in the abstract but from a specific act: the murder of his brother Wenceslas in 935, an event that simultaneously cleared his path to the Bohemian throne and created a martyr whose cult would outlast the dynasty itself. These early Bohemian obols are among the first coins struck in the region under native rule, issued as Boleslaus consolidated control over a duchy still finding the boundaries between Přemyslid authority and the Ottonian sphere. Cach 38 is a rare survivor of a primitive and short-lived coinage tradition.
