Obverse description Central field occupied by a large cruciform letter 'L' enclosed within a plain inner circle, the arms of the letter forming a cross-like device characteristic of the anonymous Lyon coinage. A small cross pattée surmounts the inner circle at the top. The surrounding legend, partially legible on this irregularly struck flan, reads PRIMA S with a pellet stop, referencing Lyon's status as seat of the Primatial See. The overall style is typical of mid-13th century French feudal billon coinage, with crude letterspacing and uneven relief resulting from hand hammering.
