The County of Vendôme passed through several hands during this period, caught between the competing ambitions of the Capetian crown and the great Loire valley baronies. By 1205 the county was held by the Montoire branch, and these small billon pieces — anonymous, unattributed to any named count by design — circulated in a region whose political loyalty shifted enough that issuing authority was deliberately obscured on the coinage itself.
