Pheneos was an Arkadian city with an unusual monetary history — it struck coins sporadically and in limited volume, largely because the city's political fortunes were perpetually tied to whichever regional power held sway over the northeastern Arkadian highlands. The period bracketed by this issue saw Pheneos navigate the collapse of the Arkadian League following the Battle of Mantineia in 362 BC, after which many smaller poleis quietly retrenched their civic ambitions, coinage included.
The Weber 4317 specimen passed through one of the most methodically assembled collections of Greek bronzes and silver ever formed, providing a useful die-link anchor for the series.
