Gergis was a minor city in the Troad — the northwestern corner of Asia Minor — whose coinage is tied to a community that largely disappears from the historical record after the Persian and then Macedonian consolidations of the region. The obol denomination at this weight sits at the lower functional edge of daily silver coinage, the kind of piece used in market transactions rather than treasury reserves. Surviving examples are scarce; Gergis struck no large-denomination series that would anchor a collector tradition, and the city's obscurity means few ancient hoards have been attributed to it with certainty.
