Obverse description Silphium plant rendered in high relief, depicted frontally with a central stalk rising from the base of the flan; two pairs of broad, curling leaves extend laterally from the stem at two distinct levels, and a cluster of five umbels crowns the apex. The naturalistic rendering of the silphium — the emblematic plant of Kyrenaika and a primary source of the city's wealth — is characteristic of the Archaic die-cutting tradition. The design fills the flan with confident, stylized authority, with the plant occupying virtually the entire obverse field.
