Kleonai sat between Corinth and Argos along the road through the Tretos pass — a position that gave the small city strategic relevance well beyond its size. The city controlled access to the Nemean sanctuary, where the Nemean Games were administered under Kleonaian authority during the early fifth century before Argos eventually wrested control of the festival. These obols would have circulated among the merchants, athletes, and pilgrims moving through that corridor during precisely that window.
