Obverse description Facing forepart of a seal (phoke), rendered in archaic style with schematic features; the animal's large eye is prominently depicted in relief at center, flanked by the snout to the left and a suggestion of the body to the right, all contained within the irregular flan. The design serves as the civic badge of Phokaia, whose name derives from the Greek word for seal.
