Halikarnassos — modern Bodrum on the Turkish Aegean coast — was under Persian-appointed dynastic rule during this period, governed by figures from the Lygdamid dynasty. The decade spanning this issue includes the reign of Artemisia II's son Pisindelis, a largely obscure ruler sandwiched between more famous family members. That the city struck independent silver coinage at all during Persian hegemony reflects the administrative latitude satraps extended to coastal Carian cities, provided tribute obligations were met.
At under a gram, this denomination saw hard daily use — fish markets, ferry crossings, single-item transactions.
