Beschrijving voorzijde Nike depicted standing facing left, her large wings spread prominently to either side, rendered in a bold archaic style characteristic of 4th century BC Thraco-Macedonian coinage. The goddess is shown in three-quarter view with detailed feathering on the wings visible in the die work. Her right hand is extended forward, holding a wreath. The figure occupies the full field of the coin with no legend or border decoration.

Aanvullende informatie

The Thraco-Macedonian region in the fourth century BC was home to dozens of small autonomous communities, many of which struck their own silver coinage during brief windows of political independence before absorption into the expanding Macedonian kingdom under Philip II. Attributing these minor fractional pieces remains genuinely difficult — the issuing authority here is unknown, and scholarly consensus has not settled the question.

At under a gram of silver, this obol circulated as the smallest practical unit in daily transactions.
