Haliartos was a Boeotian city on the southern shore of Lake Copais, and its earliest coinage predates the formal Boeotian League federation that would later impose a degree of monetary uniformity across the region. These archaic issues were struck when individual poleis still controlled their own dies entirely. The fabric on Haliartian obols of this period tends to be thick and dumpy — a direct consequence of the small flan cut from a heavy rod and struck with minimal preparation.
