Nummus - Valentinianus I SECVRITAS REIPVBLICAE; Rome

Valentinian I never visited Rome during his reign — he spent virtually the entire period from 364 to his death in 375 on campaign or at frontier residences, managing simultaneous pressure from the Alamanni on the Rhine and the Quadi and Sarmatians on the Danube. The Rome mint was producing this SECVRITAS REIPVBLICAE type throughout the period when Valentinian's general Theodosius the Elder was conducting operations in Britain following the so-called "Great Conspiracy" of 367, a coordinated barbarian assault that briefly overran the diocese entirely.

RIC IX 24 places this firmly within the Rome mint's output under the reorganized post-Constantinian officina structure.
