Obverse description Right-facing bust of Emperor Valentinian I rendered in the late Roman imperial style, pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed. The effigy occupies the central field, with the cuirass and paludamentum visible at the shoulder. The encircling Latin legend reads D N VALENTINI-ANVS P F AVG, separated by the bust, and is contained within a beaded border characteristic of fourth-century bronze coinage. The portrait displays the characteristic stylized musculature of Valentinianic-era die engraving.
