Control letters D and R appear in the left and right fields respectively, with the officina letter F positioned below. The exergue bears the mint signature ΓSISCS or ΓSISCϟ, identifying the third officina of the Siscia mint. The reverse legend SECVRITAS-REIPVBLICAE is distributed around the field, proclaiming the security of the Roman state. |

Valentinian I ruled the western empire while his brother Valens held the east — a division formalized in 364 AD that would outlast both men and define the trajectory of late Roman administration. The Siscia mint was among the most productive in the western half, and issues of this type span nearly the full decade of Valentinian's reign, making precise dating within the 367–375 window difficult without die study. Valentinian died in 375 of a burst blood vessel, reportedly brought on by rage during an audience with a Quadi delegation.
