附加信息

Valens came to power not through succession but through his brother Valentinian I's deliberate choice to share rule — an arrangement finalized at Mediolanum in 364, just weeks after Valentinian's own elevation. The western half went to Valentinian; Valens received the east, a division that would prove fateful fourteen years later at Adrianople. Aquileia, positioned at the head of the Adriatic, served the western court and issued bronze coinage for both administrations during these early joint years.

RIC IX 9B from Aquileia falls within the first officina sequence and is among the earlier issues of Valens's reign, struck before the weight standard for this denomination was revised downward again in 367.
