Obverse description Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Valens facing right, rendered in the late Roman imperial style characteristic of the Valentinianic period. The emperor's portrait exhibits detailed chasing on the cuirass and paludamentum, with the diadem pearls visible along the brow. The encircling Latin legend reads D N VALEN-S P F AVG, distributed around the bust from left to right. The flan is slightly irregular in shape, as is common for struck bronze nummi of this period. The coin displays a patina of verdigris green consistent with prolonged burial.
