Obverse description Right-facing bust of Emperor Valens, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed, rendered in the characteristic late Roman imperial style. The pearl diadem is clearly articulated across the brow, with strands of pearls arranged in rows atop the head. The bust displays careful detailing of the paludamentum fastened at the right shoulder, and the cuirass beneath. The surrounding field carries the imperial legend divided on either side of the effigy. The portrait exhibits the stylized yet authoritative workmanship typical of the Constantinopolitan mint workshops of the 360s.
