Cyzicus was one of the Eastern Empire's most productive mints in the fifth century, and the CONCORDIA AVG type issued under Theodosius II belongs to a period when the court at Constantinople was projecting unity it did not entirely possess. The Western throne was in chronic crisis throughout the 420s and 430s — Valentinian III ruled in name while generals like Aetius held actual power — and the Eastern court's repeated invocations of imperial concord on small bronze issues were as much political messaging as piety.
At this weight and module, these were the lowest-denomination coins in active circulation, handled by the poorest urban populations daily.
