Theodosius I issued this type during the years immediately following the catastrophic Roman defeat at Adrianople in 378, when the empire was still absorbing the military and political consequences of losing the emperor Valens to the Visigoths. The Thessalonica mint was a critical production center during this period precisely because of its proximity to the Balkans frontier — the city itself had briefly served as Theodosius's operational base before he formally entered Constantinople in 380.
RIC IX 60B is a common enough type, but Thessalonica issues from this specific emission occasionally show officina variations worth cross-referencing against the OCRE corpus.
