RIC IX 69 belongs to the final years of Theodosius I's sole rule following his defeat of the usurper Eugenius at the Battle of the Frigidus in 394 — one of the last military actions fought under explicit pagan-versus-Christian framing, with Eugenius's forces reportedly displaying images of Jupiter. The Antioch mint was among the most productive eastern workshops of the period, and issues from these years carry the administrative weight of an empire Theodosius would divide between his two sons just before his death in January 395, ending unified Roman rule permanently.
