The monogram, composed of the letters of the name ODOVACR interlocked, is the principal design element, characteristic of late Roman and post-Roman barbarian coinage conventions. The style is crude and typical of the debased nummus coinage of the late fifth century. No portrait or effigy is present; the monogram serves as the sole identifier of the issuing authority. |

Odovacar — the Germanic chieftain who deposed Romulus Augustulus in 476 and is conventionally used to mark the end of the Western Roman Empire — struck coins in the name of the eastern emperor Zeno, maintaining the fiction of imperial continuity while ruling Italy as king in all but title. These Ravenna issues belong to his final years; by 489 the Ostrogothic king Theoderic had invaded Italy at Zeno's behest, and the siege of Ravenna itself began in 490. Odovacar held the city until 493, when he surrendered under a negotiated peace and was murdered by Theoderic ten days later.
