Maximinus II was appointed Caesar in May 305 as part of Diocletian's second tetrarchy, a system already under strain almost from the moment Diocletian and Maximian abdicated. The London mint — one of the westernmost in the empire — produced this issue under the authority of Constantius I, in whose territory Britain fell. When Constantius died at York in July 306, the mint's political allegiance shifted almost immediately, and London's output for Maximinus effectively ceased as Constantine was proclaimed by the troops on the spot.
