Licinius I struck heavily from the IOVI CONSERVATORI type throughout his reign, using Jupiter as a theological counterweight to Constantine's increasingly Christian iconography — a rivalry that was already hardening by 317 and would end in open civil war by 324. The Arelate mint, modern Arles, had only been established by Constantine around 313, making this a very early product of that facility.
