Issued at Antioch during the uneasy period following the collapse of the Tetrarchy, this nummus belongs to a moment when Licinius was still consolidating power in the East after his appointment by Galerius in 308. The GENIO EXERCITVS reverse type was a deliberate appeal to military loyalty — Licinius had no dynastic claim and no battlefield reputation to trade on. His authority depended entirely on the army's goodwill.
Antioch's mint was among the most prolific in the eastern empire and struck for multiple claimants in rapid succession during these years. RIC VI 147b places this piece in the mint's second officina.
