Julian was appointed Caesar by Constantius II in 355 AD, a move driven by military necessity on the Rhine frontier rather than any dynastic affection — Constantius had already executed most of his own family. The Arelate mint, modern Arles, was among the most productive western workshops of the period and struck FEL TEMP REPARATIO bronzes in enormous quantities throughout the 350s, which means condition rather than scarcity is the operative variable for this type.
RIC VIII 271 falls within a series whose sheer volume of output has left scholars debating precise date ranges within the broader 355–360 window of Julian's Caesarship.
